Excerpt from The Sacred Romance by John Eldredge and Brent Curtis.
"Some years into our spiritual journey, after the waves of anticipation that mark the beginning of any pilgrimage have begun to ebb into life’s middle years of service and busyness, a voice speaks to us in the midst of all we are doing. There is something missing in all of this, it suggests. There IS something more.
The voice often comes in the middle of the night or the early hours of the morning when our hearts are most unedited and vulnerable. At first, we mistake the source of this voice and assume it is just our imagination. We fluff up our pillow, roll over, and go back to sleep. Days, weeks, even months go by and the voice speaks to us again: Aren’t you thirsty? Listen to your heart. THERE IS SOMETHING MISSING."
Restoring PASSION !
Maybe you’re like us. You’ve been a believer for years. Perhaps you have even been serving the Lord for years. But now, you find yourself feeling that the passion you once had for the Lord has all but disappeared. Oh, you’re still busy in ministry; in fact, you may be busier than ever. B U T … that passion – that deep hunger and thirst – for Him is gone.
We had been in ministry for over 20 years and we were operating a successful, high powered N.E. youth ministry. Then the truth began to dawn and ….. finally we had to admit that the passionate nature of our faith had disappeared. This admission was not easy and we felt very insecure spiritually. With the help of two good friends in California, we began to see the light. We had "lost our first love." It hadn’t happened overnight … it crept in utterly unnoticed. We had been so busy doing the Lord’s work that we no longer had any daily communion with Him. No longer were we human beings, we had become human doings.
If you relate to our story, be encouraged; what finally happened will warm your hearts. We want to compress our account of the 90’s decade into a sentence. Despite our consuming busyness in the early 90’s, our lives were eventually transformed. Once we understood that busyness was the issue, we were on our way to recovery. For as long as the Lord gives us to travel earth-side, we will proclaim the message of this web-site. (You can read about the History of our ministry, Crossroads, in the history section of this site.)
We want to be clear! Even though our problem was extreme busyness, the result was burnout. At the heart level, we were burned to a crisp. Worse still! We did not realize the severity of our condition. That is the bad news; the good news is that it was necessary for us to reach this low-ebb before we were ready to allow the Lord to do a major work in our lives. After a long season of transition, He began to slowly re-ignite our passion for His Presence. Finally, our eyes were open to all that we had lost. We had indeed lost our first love.
Thinking about you …..
Now, we spend our lives identifying with those who experience the same plight. We believe that the Lord has given us a ministry of encouragement. If you feel that your relationship with Jesus has diminished, PLEASE don’t feel you are alone. The Lord may well be doing a wonderful new work in your life!
Seldom a day goes by that we don’t hear from people who have stories like ours. The sense that "something is missing" is far more common than most of us realize. What we’ve learned tracks with what we now know to be a nation-wide problem. Many Christian authors like John Eldredge and Brent Curtis have called it "the missing intimacy", "the loss of passion" or simply the "Busyness Bug". The label is not important. The important thing is that we recognize it when it appears. Such a recognition may be just the beginning of an entirely new life-changing experience that produces joy unspeakable.
In closing this article, we hasten to make one additional point … a GIGANTIC, related point. I refer here to the Targeted Audience of the Busyness Bug.
The most vulnerable candidate for the BUSYNESS SYNDROME is the active, highly committed Christian who wants more than anything else to simply be a servant to the King.
It is this genuine, giving, serving, conscientious believer who is easy prey for the busyness bug to land on. How does this happen? That’s precisely what we want to explore with you. Please read on.
Many good friends have now reached the point where they are able to freely share their past busyness issues with others. But it takes time to recognize this dilemma, and even more time to honestly admit it.
At this point our conviction is irrepressible!!! We’re convinced that when we became Christians, we were given new life so that we could "enjoy the trip." Somewhere along the way we took a detour … lost our way. When we lost our way, we lost our first love. The way back?? Jesus said simply, "I am the way."
An intimate relationship with Jesus is THE ONLY WAY back. The answer to all of life’s questions are found only in Him. Walking through life with Him as Friend, turns the dark night into day.
This site has a single purpose. It is to encourage anyone who has a hunger and thirst for spiritual intimacy with God. It is God’s, our Heavenly Father’s, chief desire that we enjoy intimate fellowship with Him and with Jesus our Friend, and with the Spirit Who makes spiritual intimacy possible.
